Sheet metal bending is a common process in metal fabrication used to create various shapes and forms from flat metal sheets. It involves applying force to the sheet metal to deform it along a straight axis, typically using a machine called a press brake.

Here are the general steps involved in sheet metal bending:

1. Material selection: Choose the appropriate type and gauge (thickness) of sheet metal for the desired application. Common materials used include steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and copper.

2. Design and layout: Determine the desired dimensions, angles, and bend allowances for the part. Use design software or manual calculations to determine the bend lines and necessary tooling.

3. Tooling selection: Select the appropriate tooling for the press brake. This includes the punch (upper tool) and die (lower tool), which come in various shapes and sizes to accommodate different bending requirements.

4. Set up the press brake: Install the selected tooling on the press brake according to the specifications for the desired bend. Adjust the back gauge, which positions the sheet metal accurately for bending, and ensure the machine is properly calibrated.

5. Position the sheet metal: Place the sheet metal on the press brake, aligning it with the back gauge and ensuring it is flat and secure.

6. Bend setup: Set the desired angle and bend length on the press brake controls. This determines the extent of the bend and the distance between bends for multiple bends in a single piece.

7. Bending process: Activate the press brake to apply force to the sheet metal. The punch descends and presses the sheet metal against the die, causing it to deform and bend to the desired angle.

8. Check and adjust: Inspect the bent part for accuracy and quality. Measure the angles and dimensions using appropriate measuring tools, such as calipers or angle gauges. Make adjustments as necessary to achieve the desired specifications.

9. Repeat as needed: If multiple bends are required, reposition the sheet metal on the press brake according to the design layout, and repeat the bending process.

It's worth noting that the complexity of the bending process can vary depending on factors such as the material thickness, bend radius, and the shape being formed. Skilled operators and proper machine setup are crucial for achieving precise and consistent results in sheet metal bending.
